What is Myofascial Release-The Barnes' Approach?
Myofascial Release the Barnes' Approach is consider to be a very effective and profound mind/body therapy that is safe, gentle and consistently effective in producing results that last. It is used to treat a number of medical, chronic and stress related conditions while restoring you to a pain free, active lifestyle by specifically releasing the fascia within the body!
The most interesting aspect of the fascial system is that it is not just a system of separate coverings. It is literally one continuous structure that exists from head to toe without interruption. Picture a head to toe body suit now picture it being 3 dimensional and muti-layered!

James L. Oschman, PHD says " The Fascia forms the largest system, in the body as it is the system that touches all other systems".
Fascia not only surrounds every system and structure within the body such as our muscles, tendons, ligaments, organs, glands, nerves, veins, cells, bones for example, fascia also runs in between the muscle fibers thru the organs, glands, cell's and so on. In this way you can begin to see that each part of the entire body is connected to every other part by the fascia, like the yarn in a sweater.  No Seperation!

One of the techniques of Myofascial Release is sustained compression for 5 or more minutes into the fascial system at the 1st layer of restriction within the individual’s fascia. This allows the fascia to open and release. Since our cells are crystaline in nature this sustained compression creates an electrical flow known as the Piezoelectric Effect in our body.

The sustained compression of Myofascial Release can also create biochemical changes within our bodies producing Interleukin 8 which is the body’s own natural anti-inflammatory agent. This is known as Mechanotransduction.

As the Piezoelectric Effect and Mechanotransduction occurs together the solidification of the ground substance of the fascia opens allowing fluid to flow into the fascia rehydrate it and free it to once again glide. This rehydration of the fascia takes the crushing pressure off pain sensitive structures and systems of the body relieving your symptoms of pain, aches, discomfort and more. This is called Phase Transition.

As the therapist is holding the sustained compression into the fascia waiting for the releases to begin the client pays attention to what and where they are feeling sensations. Those sensations can be physical, mental, psyche or emotional. By paying attention to what you are feeling during the session allows you to engage and participate in your healing at a deep level.

We do not force or push our way into the body we FEEL into the body to that 1st layer of restriction in the fascia. To force or push into an already overly tight fascial system can create more restriction and tightness as well as push the client past their ability to FEEL what is happening within their body and themselves. When you release fascia layer by layer that is when you get long lasting permanent results. You come into your body to feel what is there in order to heal the issues you are experiencing.
This is the way the body speaks to us which we call the fascial voice. The clients input and responses during treatment give the therapist important information on their fascial system and it assist's the client to feel more deeply within their body to what is happening in order to heal.

Trauma, inflammation, injuries, scars and/or surgical procedures to name a few ways that can create Myofascial restrictions produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch within the body. This pressure can cause pain, loss of range of motion, nagging aches and pain of the neck, back, legs, arms, fibromyalgia, plantar fasciitis, sciatica, scoliosis, restless leg syndrome and many other symptoms and diagnosis.

There is a high percentage of people suffering with pain, loss of motion and different diagnosis that may be having fascial problems.

As a side note:
In 2005 for the very first time in history Living Fascia was seen and video recorded! Up to that time frame it had only been seen, studied and understood in cadavers. In cadavers it looks and responds like shoe leather or rawhide. Living Fascia is extremely different in it's interaction, function and connection within the body and all the body's system's. Research and understanding of how the fascia impacts the body is a whole new field for the medical community. Organizations are being created to study and research the fascia exclusively. What is Fascia?

Fascia is a tough connective tissue which spreads throughout the body in a three-dimensional web from head to foot without interruption.  Imagine you are wearing a head-to-toe bodysuit.
Superficial fascia lies below the skin: deep fascia surrounds and infuses every muscle, bone, neve, blood vessel, and organs. The deepest fascia is within the dura of the cranial sacral system. Any trauma or malfunction of fascia can set up an environment of poor cellular efficiency, disease, and pain throughout the body.
Traumas, injuries, posture or inflammation can create a binding down of fascia resulting in excessive pressure - 2,000 pounds of pressure per square inch on  nerves, muscles, blood vessels, osseous structures and organs.  Since many of the standard tests such as x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc, do not show the fascial restrictions, it is thought that an extremely high percentage of people suffering with pain and/or lack of motion may be having fascial problems, but most go undiagnosed.

By releasing the fascia, many symptoms and pain we thought we had to manage or live with can begin to lift. We regain our health and vitality.
